“Writing today is not a frill for a few, but an essential skill for the many.

The National Commission on Writing

The Oregon Writing Project, housed in the Graduate School of Education & Counseling, is a collaborative program between Lewis & Clark and area schools.

For over 20 years, OWP has been a vital resource for teachers and schools, not only in the teaching of writing, but also as a model of professional development, teacher leadership and reform.

The OWP offers programs designed to improve the writing of Oregon’s students:

· Summer Invitational Institute

· District-wide in-services

· Professional development institutes

The Summer Invitational Institute is the centerpiece of the OWP's offerings, but numerous, flexible programs are also available for students, teachers, and administrators.

District-wide in-services are offered, along with Professional development institutes for individual teachers at all educational levels.

An affiliate of the National Writing Project, the Oregon Writing Project is a No Child Left Behind-approved professional development provider. Please explore the menu options, or contact site director, Linda Christensen, for information about the variety of programs on offer from the OWP.

Specifically, the Writing Project looks at how to prepare teachers to:

· Write in all subjects with clarity and style;

· Seek deeper and more critical understanding of writing and the world;

· Wake up their own voice and authority;

· Take command of their own learning;

· Manage portfolios and other exhibition forms.
